Airport blog – some personal thoughts on HOME & family

Once again I am sitting at an airport (this time it’s Montreal, CA) – spending some hours waiting for my connecting flight after visiting my mom, who is currently living here in Canada. Having the privilege to have been raised in places on almost half the globe, which necessarily includes lots of travelling and spending tons of time in airports, I should be totally used to sitting in one again. But even after all this time I have spent in airports they still they make me think. A lot. Especially about one thing – I don’t know any other place in the world that makes me ponder so much on this topic – HOME.

People often ask me which country I consider home, or which town / city I have lived in I call home. It’s a question I frankly can’t answer. There is always a lot of nice things and not so nice things about places, and you will find them wherever you go. Ups and downs are a part of our life and there’s alway pro’s and con’s about any place you stay.
But there is one thing that makes me feel at home anywhere. It’s LOVE. It may sound weird, but I assume you have heard the saying “Home is where the heart is”. Let me try to explain.

To me “home” has become by definition ‘being with the people I love and whom I can share life with, totally independent of the place on earth I am in’. It can be with people whom I have known for several years now and still share a deep connection with although we live so far apart. Or family. Or the stranger I have just met, but with whom I share something. Like a common interest – or maybe it’s the same sense of humor. But what I find is that I connect with people very quickly and deeply if we share the same faith.

To me every other Christian in this world is family – since we are all brothers and sisters – adopted children of God through the sacrifice of His son, Jesus. And this is one of the things I love about being a Christian. Not only are we never alone, because we have the Holy Spirit as our counselor and Jesus / God dwelling in us, but we have the opportunity to meet our family wherever we go. In the last couple of weeks here in Canada I have met some people who became so precious to me in such a short time. My family grows bigger and bigger each day, and I have just begun to get to know them and I am totally excited about this.

So if you want to know where my “home” is – it is really wherever you and I come together on a heart-to-heart basis. Doing life together. Maybe sharing our faith. Or some common interests. Or just a cup of coffee. So either way, thank you for reading this blog and therefore being a part of my journey – I am looking forward to our next shared coffee!

I read something from Angelina Jolie this morning, which I want to share real quick, because it also questions the stereotype of home and family and I think it’s great.
