Silke's Mercy Ships Journey

In 2015, I ventured out to explore what serving with Mercy Ships would look like.
In Madagascar I experienced the heart and vision of this Organization firsthand and decided to go home to Switzerland, where I lived at that time (I was born in Germany and raised pretty much internationally), sell all my belongings, quit my job, pack my bags and come to serve as a full-time, long-term volunteer.

During this journey I met my husband (Ruben from the Netherlands) in September 2016 and we got married in July 2018. Since then we have served together on board the Africa Mercy in Benin and Cameroon, Guinea and Senegal.  Ruben and I transferred ships and are on board of our newest member of the fleet, the Global Mercy since September 2021.
I have served on board the two ships in different roles, including as Anesthesia  Nurse in the Operating Room department, as Hospital Informatics Manager and most recently, as the Hospital Quality Manager.

Currently, the Africa Mercy is in Field Service in Senegal. Ruben and I are on the Global Mercy and are getting ready to to meet our sister ship in Senegal at the beginning of June. God willing, Ruben and I plan to stay with Mercy Ships until at least the end of this year.

We love what Mercy Ships is all about and are humbled and blessed to be a part of this mission at this time.
